Goldilocks occur sparingly on Öland and Gotland. It thrives on sunny and dry, lime- and humus-rich fine soil, such as dry meadows and soil-filled cracks in the limestone slabs. On Öland, it occurs mainly on Stora Alvaret. The main distribution is in southern parts of Europe. In the Nordic countries, it is only found on Öland.
Goldilocks is autumn flowering and usually does not start flowering until August.
The first find is from Öland and was published by Linnaeus in 1755.
The species name vulgaris comes from the Latin vulgus (hop, general) and means common. The family name Linosyris is a combination of the two family names Linum and Osyris. The former is the name of the genus flax (Linum) and the latter is the name of a genus from the family sandalwood plants.
