Högkullebacken

Surrounded by fields on all sides, there is a ringfort-like relic in the form of a low, oval dike of earth and stone. Its internal dimensions amount to 18-32 m. Entrance has probably been in the northwest.

According to on archaeologist Högkullebacken has no similarities with other prehistoric ringforts on Öland. It is probably the remains of a fortification from the Middle Ages, probably a fortified courtyard. It consisted of two parts, a 1.5-2 m high hill with a diameter of 10 m surrounded by a dike and a square, 40 x 40 m large area surrounded by earth and stone dikes. The ramparts were excavated during the 1990s. On the hill may have stood a tower of wood or stone.

The remains of the castle are difficult to access. Remember not to obstruct agricultural implements on tractor roads.
